Harley-Davidson had begun releasing “hotter” versions during this time period, such as the WLDR and the later WR, which was a purpose-built race bike. In 1937, the W series was launched with the added benefit of a recirculating oil system. These were both total-loss oiling systems. The first 45 series were known as the DL from 1929-31. It was also during this time period that 45 CI (750cc) engines became the standard displacement for racing side-valve engines in American Motorcycle Association sanctioned events.
